Misasa Onsen at a glance

Misasa Onsen is a hot spring town in central Tottori Prefecture, and it works well as a base for people who want baths in the evening and a mountain temple in the morning. Misasa in Tottori is linked by bus to Kurayoshi, the old merchant town where the JR station is.

Houses of the hot spring town line the Santoku river, and a bath sits on the riverbank below the Misasa Bridge. This page covers the public bath Kabuyu, Mount Mitoku with Nageiredo, and the Lake Togo hot springs at Hawai and Togo.

Kabuyu and the riverside bath

A public bath in the middle of town, and a free foot bath next to it.

Kabuyu is the town's public bath. According to the local onsen association, adults pay 400 JPY, and children from 3 years to primary school age pay 250 JPY. A foot bath next to it is free, and there is a drinking water spot that stays open around the clock. Opening hours can change, so ask the local association or check at the door before you plan a first soak.

The riverside bath, called the Kawara-buro, is a free open-air bath below the Misasa Bridge. Whether it can be used on a given day varies, so do not build your plan around it.

Rules differ from bath to bath, so ask at the door about tattoos, towels and soap.

Mount Mitoku and Nageiredo

A hall built into a rock wall, reached by a steep mountain walk.

Mount Mitoku (Mitokusan) is the mountain behind Misasa, and Nageiredo is the wooden hall built into a cliff face on its slope. The path brings you in front of the hall; you should not expect to go inside it. Adults pay 400 JPY for entry to the temple grounds, or 1,200 JPY together with the climb to Nageiredo (children 200 JPY and 600 JPY). This fee table dates from 1 June 2020 and is still the one the operator publishes. Groups of 20 or more pay 1,150 JPY for adults.

The climb is accepted from 08:00 to 15:00, and you should be down by 16:30. At least two people must go up together. Staff check your shoes and clothing before the climb: wear sturdy hiking shoes without metal parts, because slippery shoes and sandals are not allowed. Walking sticks are not allowed, small children may not climb, and picking plants or collecting animals is forbidden. The climb is closed in dangerous rain or snow, and in winter it is usually shut from around December to March, with no fixed date each year.

The bus from JR Kurayoshi through Misasa to the Mitokusan car park takes about 36 minutes, based on the 2025 timetable. Weekend services are different, so check the current times before you travel.

From the town centre you can also reach the train and bus connections to Tottori, and the where to stay page explains which area suits a Misasa trip.

Hawai and Togo Onsen on Lake Togo

The lake towns of Yurihama, west of Misasa, have their own hot springs.

Hawai and Togo are two more hot spring areas, both on Lake Togo in Yurihama. The name Hawai is pronounced like the island, but it is a place in Tottori. The springs lie to the west of the lake, and the official tourism site lists the lodgings of Togo under the Asahi and Matsuzaki area. Foot baths along the shore are listed on their own. Ask locally for bath prices and hours when you arrive.

A day with Misasa in the morning and a lakeside evening is easy to plan, because both lie in the middle of the prefecture. If you are crossing to the coast afterwards, see Yonago and Kaike Onsen, where the springs are salty instead.
