Tottori weather month by month

Tottori weather follows the pattern of the Sea of Japan coast: warm to hot summers, mild spring and autumn days, and a winter with cold temperatures and some snow. The figures below are official normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency for 1991 to 2020. They describe what a typical month looks like, not the forecast for your dates and not the weather measured in 2026. Check a forecast shortly before you travel.

The tables use two stations, one in Tottori city and one in Yonago. They suit the coast and the lowlands. They say nothing about the top of Mount Daisen, so for a hike read the Mount Daisen page and look up conditions for the mountain itself.

Best time to visit Tottori

If you want mild temperatures, April, May and October are the months to look at in both tables. This is an editorial judgement drawn from the normals, not an official ranking, and it does not promise dry days. In April the average high is 18.9 °C in Tottori and 18.4 °C in Yonago, in May it is 23.8 °C and 23.3 °C, and in October it is 22.4 °C and 22.1 °C. Summer is the hottest and, in July, a rainy stretch, while winter brings cold and snow.

This page gives no dates for cherry blossom or autumn colour, because those depend on the year. If flowers or leaves matter to you, look up the current season shortly before you go.

For the practical side of a trip in any month, how to get to Tottori and where to stay have the details.

Tottori in winter: snow in January and December

Winter in Tottori means cold days and some snow on the coast. In January the average highs are 8.1 °C in Tottori and 8.3 °C in Yonago, with lows of 1.1 °C and 1.3 °C. The average greatest snow depth in January is 25 cm in Tottori and 18 cm in Yonago. Snow in Tottori is mostly a winter matter, so keep some flexibility in your plans for those days. In December the normals show 10.9 °C and 3.2 °C in Tottori, with 218.4 mm of precipitation, so bring waterproof layers for a December trip.

Winter is also the season for Tottori's crab. The Matsuba crab season in 2025/26 ran from 6 November to 20 March, with the Oyagani season ending on a voluntary basis on 31 December and the Wakamatsuba season from 1 to 20 February. The dates are fixed each year, so ask for the current season before you plan a crab trip. Read more on the Tottori crab and food page.
